Ben Milam Elementary was built in McAllen, Texas in 1967, originally consisting of just 12 classrooms. Over the years, Milam has had two additional wings constructed to meet the needs of the growing population.

Milam strives to develop balanced, lifelong learners through the development of seven competencies and emotional intelligence. We are a Dual Language campus, with PK-2nd grade classrooms participating in the program. Milam offers Robotics, Chess, Choir, Cheerleading, UIL, eSports, and other clubs and teams. Our students and staff annually participate in the AHA Jump Rope for Heart event and consistently raise the most funds in the region.

Ben Milam

Benjamin Rush Milam (1788-1835) He was born in Frankfort, Kentucky, Benjamin Rush Milam was a soldier, colonizer, and entrepreneur who played a key role in Texas' fight for independence. Milam served in the War of 1812, was a colonel in the Mexican army, and contributed to Mexico's fight for independence from Spain. He also helped clear the Red River, improving navigation in the area.

In 1835, as Santa Anna advanced on Texas, Milam attempted to flee but was captured, imprisoned, and later escaped. After meeting George Collinsworth and joining the Texas independence movement, Milam helped capture Goliad and then advanced with the army toward San Antonio. When most of the army hesitated to attack, Milam made his famous plea: “Who will go with old Ben Milam to San Antonio?” Three hundred soldiers volunteered, and they successfully took San Antonio on December 9, 1835. Sadly, Milam was shot and killed on December 7, not living to see the victory at the Siege of Bexar.
